We proudly assisted West Coast Railways in securely storing the Northern Belle locomotives and coaches overnight for the Railtour to Dunrobin Castle from Dyce Station on Saturday and Sunday 28th and 29th September 2024. 2 Class 57’s 57313 and 57314, along with 11 Coaches.

This is another milestone for the trust, as we demonstrated that we can safely and securely store trains overnight.

We would like to store more trains overnight in the future in the hopes of companies wanting to start running rails tours from Aberdeen.

We have taken delivery of a long bed lathe from Inverurie Loco Works, on loan from member Ben Sinclair. It was made by Scottish toolmakers John Lang and Sons, Johnstone, recognised for their high-quality, well-designed machines (they ceased to be an independent manufacturer in the 1960’s).

In summer 2023 we made an interesting discovery at the northern end of the engine shed hall. Excavations revealed over 60 feet of original inspection pit that is largely intact. It has a cambered brick floor to allow drainage and brick walls up to 2ft in height.

We are nearing the end of the restoration of the office building. The summer has seen the conclusion of the lining and painting of the interior with all necessary wiring etc. As you can see contractors have also completed the roofing to a high standard, using heritage appropriate Welsh slate (good to see such traditional skills in use)

As part of its centenary celebrations, the world-famous locomotive The Flying Scotsman visited Aberdeen on 3rd July 2023. Ferryhill welcomed hundreds of enthusiasts who had come to watch her being coaled, watered and turned on our turntable. Thanks to the efforts of all the FRHT volunteers (including those on gates, marshalling and serving customers) the day went very smoothly.

The picture shows a partially disassembled piston cylinder for Locomotive RSH 7846. Jon Tyler and Tom Carnie are swapping out the piston rings with new, custom made, cast iron replacements having discovered serious wear on the originals. Once installed the end cover can be replaced with a new gasket. Tom’s previous experience at Inverurie Loco Works has been invaluable in overcoming the myriad of small engineering challenges that such a restoration presents.

On the 18th April, we had a unique visit; two black 5 locomotives, 44871 and 45407 ‘The Lancashire Fusilier’. were coaled and watered while the Railway Touring Company tour stopped at Aberdeen. During the 9 day excursion, carriages were steam hauled, double-headed (with a class 47 locomotive at the rear). The Ferryhill schedule was tight however preparations and operations on the day went perfectly thanks to Duty Officer Peter Dunne and team. Despite the poor weather we were pleased to see members and visitors who were able to attend our first steam day of 2024.
